Kington did not encourage me to exercise these poor navigation skills, nor was it an accurate name for such a small town with only three main roads, no road exceeding the speed limit of thirty-five miles per hour, and only one gas station out by the freeway. It’s Anna, right?” A woman, clearly Carl’s mother, stood on the front porch of a farmhouse on the outskirts of town. She did not look anything like Carl with her blond hair and wide smile. She guided me into the room, making sure not to touch the flower-vined tattoo that trailed to my elbow. The room smelled like warm, freshly baked bread and beef stew. Carl appeared in the stairwell dressed in a buttoned-up shirt and businessman pants. “Where’s your tie, Carl?” Mrs. K said, waving him back up the stairs. Sheepish, Carl turned and bounded up the stairs, all ten steps, in one leap. The impressive athletic feat was strange enough, but Carl and Mrs. K halted. Even their breathing had stopped. They had insisted he play outside (despite the heat and the sun and the bugs). "What am I supposed to do?" Roy asked. "Be creative," they said before shuffling him out of their air-conditioned house. Creatively, Roy sat on the porch, but not really. He wasn't truthfully, actually very good at being creative. He had never been as fascinated by fairy tales and adventure stories, not like his sister anyway. His sister would do everything she could to get him to play make-believe games and explore regular-looking things, like big rocks and trees. She would call the inside of trees, "tree worlds."
